■ What is the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's Startup Support Project for Expanding into Developing Countries "GlobalXpander Tokyo"?
GlobalXpander Tokyo is a program designed to support startups in Tokyo aiming to solve social issues faced by developing countries, helping them strengthen their competitiveness and secure a foothold in the global market.
Under this Program, we provide support for Tokyo startups that aspire to expand their businesses into developing countries, offering assistance in planning and conducting verifications prior to overseas expansion, along with accompanying support from the operational secretariat.
In the second term, Zenmov Inc. (Head Office: Meguro-ku, Tokyo; President: Kiyoshi Tanaka) has been selected from a large number of applicants.
■ Overview of Products/Services and Research/Verification Plan
This program will conduct research and verification on solving traffic issues in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, using the AI-powered traffic management system “SMOC.”
- Background and Issues
1. Issues with public transportation
In Kota Kinabalu, the largest city in Sabah, Malaysia, daily traffic congestion occurs, resulting in delays of up to 90 minutes according to a 2024 survey. Although local transportation such as regular buses and minibuses is used for commuting, the efficiency of bus services is low (buses do not adhere to schedules or routes), and increased ownership of private cars has led to a decrease in the usage rate of public transportation, with an increase in commuting by car. As a result, it is said that "the use of public transportation by commuters has decreased to 20%, with 80% using private vehicles."
2. Issues with logistics
Kota Kinabalu is a key point for trade, with container ports and industrial parks serving as junctions for international trade. However, the increasing traffic of large vehicles contributes significantly to congestion, which also affects public transportation.
3. Issues with tourist transportation
Not only is public transportation to tourist areas insufficient, but it is also said that congestion is causing a decrease in repeat visitors. One survey reported that "42% of foreign tourists find it difficult to use public transportation in Sabah," with the main reason identified as a lack of clear information on bus routes, schedules, and stops.
In response to these congestion issues, there is growing期待 for optimization routing technology. Utilizing our smart mobility platform, we aim to contribute to improvements in public transportation and logistics through "visualization of traffic congestion," "improvement of public transport services," "traffic volume distribution through optimized routing," and "improvement of transportation policies."
- Overview of Products/Services
SMOC (Smart Mobility Operation Cloud)
"SMOC" is a cloud platform that integrates visualization of traffic conditions, AI-based demand forecasting and simulation, operation schedule optimization, real-time monitoring, and data analysis. It supports everything from operational planning to field response and evaluation. Composed of a passenger app, driver app, operations management app, and cloud server, it not only improves the efficiency of public and commercial vehicles but is also applicable to urban transportation infrastructure for smart cities, car-sharing, delivery, and maintenance inspections. We are also working on multi-mobility solutions in partnership with electric vehicles, self-driving cars, and bicycles, as well as traffic information collection using smart poles and drones. Additionally, we are developing services that utilize digital twin technology for simulation evaluations.
